Hunan University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, and a university under the "Project 211", "Project 985" and "World-Class University" initiatives. Its educational roots trace back to Yuelu Academy founded in 976 AD. In 1903, Yuelu Academy merged with Hunan Higher School, which was restructured from Shiwu Academy established in 1897. It was officially named Hunan University in 1926 and became one of the 16 national universities in China in 1937. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Li Da, one of the main founders and early leaders of the Communist Party of China, served as its first president, and Comrade Mao Zedong personally inscribed the name "Hunan University". In 2000, Hunan University merged with Hunan College of Finance and Economics to form the new Hunan University.
The university currently has two campuses: the South Campus and the Finance and Economics Campus, covering a total area of 1,543,300 square meters (2,315 mu). Among them, the first phase of construction will be put into use in 2026, the 100th anniversary of the naming of Hunan University, providing strong impetus for the high-quality development of the university.
